Defining Your Space: The Importance of Clean Edges
Edging is the "frame" for your landscape's masterpiece. Beyond just looking sharp, a solid border serves a functional purpose by preventing grass roots (especially creeping types like Bermuda) from invading your mulch beds and flower gardens.
Choosing the Right Material
The material you choose affects both the "look" of your yard and the difficulty of installation:
- Steel/Aluminum: The professional’s choice. Virtually invisible, extremely durable, and easy to bend into graceful curves.
- Plastic/Composite: The most affordable. Great for DIY projects, but can "heave" out of the ground during winter freeze-thaw cycles.
- Brick/Stone: Provides a classic, high-end look. Doubles as a "mowing strip" if installed flush with the ground, allowing you to mow right over the edge.
Installation Tip: The Depth Factor
Most edging should be installed so that 1-2 inches of the material remains below the soil surface. This creates a physical barrier that stops the "rhizomes" (underground stems) of the grass. If the edging is too shallow, grass will simply grow underneath it and emerge in your garden bed.
Lawn Edging FAQs
How much waste should I calculate?
Our calculator automatically includes a **5% waste factor**. This covers the overlap at the joints and any small errors in cutting. For very complex or serpentine beds, you might increase this to 10%.
What is a "Natural Edge"?
Also known as a Victorian Edge, this involves cutting a 3-4 inch deep "V" trench between the grass and the mulch. It requires zero materials other than a spade or power edger, but needs to be recut at least twice a season.
Should I use stakes for plastic edging?
Absolutely. Use a heavy-duty stake every 2-3 feet. Without stakes, plastic edging will expand and contract with the temperature, leading to a wavy and unprofessional appearance.
